Layer: Habitat Indices (ID: 2)

Name: Habitat Indices

Display Field: CATCHMENT_TYPE

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: This polygon dataset contains the Coastal Catchment boundaries as defined in the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission; Salmon and Steelhead Stock Inventory Assessment Program's Catchments feature class (SSHIAPHydro SegCats (Waldo et. al. 2008)) and additionallymodified by Squaxin Island Tribe's Natural Resources Department staff. A group of adjacent catchments often comprise a larger watershed although many shoreline adjacent catchments are confined hydrologically and drain directly to the marine environment. The source data was modified to fill gaps/holes in the source data, derive a more uniform catchment size, and to include only catchments abutting the marine shoreline and those catchments within three neighbors (as one continues upland from the nearshore) of the shoreline typically within a distance of 1.5-3.5 miles. Many catchments including stream mouths were also modified to more realistically include the ecological features and functions immediately adjacent to these stream mouth features. These Coastal Catchments will, for the most part, nest within NWIFC SSHIAP's Catchments and within PSNERP's assessment units. The intention is to provide an additional level of higher resolution / finer scale analysis and to allow planners & practitioners to step one level deeper or zoom into the landscape when assessing biological and feature occurrences, ecological forms & functions, and when placing projects on the ground.Land cover summaries for Nearshore Zones, Nearshore Catchments, and Upland Catchments were created with the Geospatial Modeling Environment extension for ArcGIS 10.x. ("isectpolyrst" command) using NOAA C-CAP 30m land cover data from 2011. Total Percent Development scores were calculated by summing High, Medium, & Low Intensity Development.Catchments for the nearshore as well as the adjacent uplands are scored to provide information on landscape scale conditions and impacts. Neighborhood associations can then be derived between nearshore areas and their contributing uplands as well as between uplands themselves. Restoration and conservation strategies are devised for individual catchments as well as for multiple catchments landscapes. Discrete individual projects can then be nested into the catchment strategies. It is recomended that users familiarize themselves with the PSNERP GIS data and even incorporate the PSNERP GIS layers into a GIS project that displays the Coastal Catchment Analysis Project data. Of particular note should be the PSNERP 'Restoration_Protection_Planning' feature dataset that includes the multiple Strategies feature classes. Users are then able to view & display data from the PSNERP and then zoom in further to view & display the CCAP data. The Squaxin Island Tribe has built and maintains an online Map Viewer the Headwaters of the Salish Sea that has incorporated both datasets as well as other pertinent nearshore GIS data.
